South Africa Sneaker Culture History: New Balance x Shelflife x Dr.Z "City of Gold 574"

Updated: Aug 8, 2020

In 2014 New Balance combined forces with South Africa's premier sneaker boutique and local artist Dr. Zulu for a unique new take on their classic New Balance 574 as the "City of Gold". Drawing inspiration from the city ofJohannesburg, known for its gold trade, this 574 features golden accents throughout the premium black and grey nubuck upper.

The graphics also make reference to the formidable Parktown Prawn king cricket. Specific to the Johannesburg region, the Parktown Prawn has grown into a cultural icon due to its aggressive nature and the urban legend of indestructibility.Removable and interchangeable velcro "N" logos add a final special detail.

The "City of Gold" Dr. Zulu x Shelflife x New Balance 574 was available at most Premium New Balance retailers, including Kith, Concepts. End, Crooked Tongues, Sns, Mita and many more.

This was one of the greatest moments in South African Street Culture and we hope to see more!!
